Beyond the Basics

Duration: 24 hours- 3 hours/week

Come one night a week from 6:30 – 9:30pm for eight weeks, and take your silversmithing skills to the next level. Some of the techniques covered are pearl setting, soldering 3 dimensional forms, riveting, learning to set stones with unique shape and so much more. These techniques will be demonstrated, and you will be guided through practice pieces, then encouraged to incorporate some of your new found knowledge into your own, one of a kind designs.  Some previous silversmithing experience required.

 

Throughout the duration of the class students will get assorted discounts on cut stones, metal and tools. Instructor will have specialty tools available for students to try before deciding if they'd like to purchase them for specific techniques.

Required Tools (from Beginner's Kit):

  • 4" Jeweler’s Sawframe
  • 6" 1/2 Round File – 2 cut 
  • 1- File Handle
  • 1 pair – AA Tweezers
  • Bezel Pusher
  • Emery Paper (240, 280, 400)

Suggested Tools

  • 6" Ring file – 4 cut
  • 4-cut needle file (square or round)
  • 1 doz 3/0 saw blades
  • Solder Pick
  • Polishing Paper
  • Set of drill bits
  • Digital or Vernier calipers
  • Round nose pliers
  • Half round nose pliers
  • Flat nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Dividers
  • Center punch
  • Rawhide mallet
  • Ring clamp
  • Setting burs (project specific)
  • Assorted craytex and burs

Students will also need to purchase:

  • Sterling silver
  • Cabochon stone
  • Facetted stone
  • Bezel wire

Additional materials may be required

You’ll also need a notebook and pen or pencil, and a small toolbox for carrying around your goodies!
